Power BI in Excel from another tenant
Are you working in Excel with a Power BI semantic model located in the tenant of a
another organization (where you are a guest)? In that case, the default
"Analyze in Excel" connection often doesn't work: Excel will then search within your own tenant.
This page creates a .odc-a connection file that forces Excel to
sign in to the correct tenant.
You can choose any name you like. This will be the file name and the name you see in Excel.
Enter a name.
The GUID of the tenant where the workspace is located (not your own tenant).
You can request this from the administrator of that organization, or via
entra.microsoft.com › Overview › Tenant ID.
The domain name (e.g., organization.onmicrosoft.com) is also acceptable.
Enter a tenant ID (GUID) or tenant domain.
Exactly as the workspace is named in Power BI Service. Spaces are allowed.
Enter the workspace name.
The exact name of the semantic model (dataset) within that workspace.
Enter the name of the semantic model.
✔ File downloaded. Double-click it to open it in Excel.
How to Use the File
- Download it
.odc-file using the button above. - Double-click the file. Excel opens and establishes a connection.
- At the login prompt, log in with the account that is a guest in the target tenant.
- Excel then displays a pivot table based on the semantic model.
Terms and Conditions
- The workspace is on a Premium, Premium Per User (PPU), or Fabric plan. The connection goes through the XMLA endpoint, which is only available there.
- Your account has been invited as a guest in the other tenant and has at least Build permissions on the semantic model.
- The file is created in your browser. No data is sent to Referit.
